COLD LASER THERAPY

WHAT IS COLD LASER THERAPY?

Cold Laser Therapy or Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a treatment commonly used on patients suffering from acute and chronic conditions. It utilizes low levels of light to stimulate soft tissue healing and reduce inflammation. Hot lasers are used for cauterizing and coagulating tumors or tissue. In contrast, cold laser therapy's light is not strong enough to destroy the tissue. It can be administered on patients who suffer from both acute and chronic pain.

HOW COLD LASERS WORK?

During the procedure, your therapist will use a laser device. Varying wavelengths and outputs of low-level light are applied directly to a targeted area for several minutes. The low-level light then passes through the skin's layers. Once the light has been absorbed, it interacts with the light-sensitive components in the cells.

This process is much like how photosynthesis in plants works. Sunlight is absorbed by plants, which is then converted to usable energy to make the plant grow and flourish.

Red and near-infrared light from the laser device reduces oxidative stress and increases ATP. ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is a high-energy molecule found in cells. Its purpose is to store and supply the energy needed by the cells. This therapy improves cell metabolism, which improves healing speed and reduces inflammation.

This laser therapy is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for various conditions. It is deemed safe when administered under the care of a doctor or a qualified practitioner. The procedure is noninvasive and painless. You'll feel no vibration or heat and there's no sound. There's also no need for medication or other preparation.

However, this therapy shouldn’t be used on cancerous lesions, thyroid, and the eyes. And although each session will only take a few minutes, it may take several treatments before any obvious effect takes place.

WHAT IS COLD LASER THERAPY USED FOR?

Cold laser therapy can be used for an increasing number of medical treatments and conditions such as:

Minor Injuries and Sprains

Cold laser therapy is known to help reduce swelling and relieve pain on the joints and soft tissues. It can be administered on conditions like neck pain, lower back pain, knee pain, trigger points, etc.

Acupuncture

If a client is uncomfortable with needles, acupuncturists might opt for cold laser therapy instead. The low-level laser can stimulate your acupoints the same way needles do without piercing your skin.

Skin Rejuvenation

Cold laser therapy can be used to improve skin texture, firmness, and resilience. It can reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and treats hyperpigmentation. Dermatologists use it to treat skin problems, like acne, psoriasis, burns, dermatitis, rashes, edema, and more.

Wound Healing

Cold laser therapy can accelerate the healing of wounds and treat chronic non-healing wounds like those related to diabetes.

Aches and Pains

Cold laser therapy helps patients with acute or chronic pain from musculoskeletal conditions such as fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Inflammation

Dentists use cold lasers to treat inflammations and ulcerations in the mouth. Doctors administer it on inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic autoimmune diseases.
