BOTOX

Aging is an inevitable process that somehow scares most women (and men). Add to that the stress from our lifestyle and pollution that becomes more and more vivid on our faces as we grow older. Luckily, Botox can rejuvenate your skin, making you look younger without committing to a full-face surgery.

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Botox (Botulinum Toxin) is a prescription medication made from a neurotoxin protein. It may sound scary, but it is perfectly safe as long as it's administered by a licensed professional. Botox is effective for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles on the face and neck, as well as a remedy for various medical conditions.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Preparation

Botox comes in powder form which a licensed doctor dilutes in saline to turn it into an injectable. Using saline also helps in taking out the noxious capabilities of Botox.

Effect in the body

Once it has been injected into the desired area, it blocks the nerve impulses that tell your muscles to contract. The muscles in the injected area will be kept from moving, causing the wrinkles to relax and soften, and preventing new ones from forming.

Botox will stay in the injected area. It doesn't make the area go numb either as Botox only blocks the "moving" nerves and not the "feeling" nerves. After 3-10 days, the skin on the injected area will have a smoother and younger appearance. The effect will last for about three to four months and treatment will be needed again.

WHAT TO EXPECT

As with any medical treatments, you will have to consult with a doctor first before the actual Botox procedure. You will have to bring your medical history for the doctor to know if you have any health conditions, taking medications or supplements and if you had any previous surgeries. An examination will be done on your skin to gauge it's thickness, elasticity, and to determine if Botox is right for you.
Botox is not for everyone. It cannot be administered on:
Pregnant or nursing women
People who may have an allergic reaction to any ingredients in Botox
If there's an infection on the area where the injection will be made
A skin test will be done, where a small amount of Botox will be injected into your forearm to see if you're allergic to it or not. Itching, redness, or any other symptoms may occur if you have an allergic reaction. If everything is well, the doctor will explain the procedure, risks, and costs.

Procedure

1

The procedure for injecting Botox is always done in a licensed clinic. It may last 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of injections. A cold pack or topical cream may be applied to the area where the Botox will be injected. Several tiny injections will then be administered directly into the muscle.

2

After 24 to 48 hours, an improvement in the treated area will be noticeable. However, it will take three or more days for the final effects to appear. Avoid strenuous activities 24 hours after the procedure. You would also be advised to remain upright for many hours after the injections and to NOT RUB OR MASSAGE the treated area to prevent the Botox from spreading to other muscles.

3

When the effects of Botox start to wear off, wrinkles may return but not as prominent as before. You can then have additional injections administered if you want. For maximum benefits, it is recommended to have two to three injections per year.

How does botox Benefit patients?

Other than smoothing out wrinkles on the face, Botox can also be used to help treat the following conditions:

Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Hyperhidrosis is a condition wherein a person sweats excessively even when they don't feel hot. Botox helps by blocking nerves responsible for sweating from receiving directions from the brain. This is especially helpful in localized areas such as the underarms. In 2004, it was approved by the FDA as a sweat-reducing treatment.

Overactive Bladder Treatment

Botox is usually the last resort given to patients suffering from overactive bladder. Botox helps the muscles relax, giving you more time to go to the toilet when the need to urinate arises.

Sex-Related Problems

Botox helps relax tensed vaginal muscles which cause painful sex in women. In men, Botox helps relax the bulbospongiosus muscle of the penis which in turn helps delay ejaculation.

Cold Hands Treatment

Cold hands are caused by poor blood circulation. Botox helps by relaxing the muscles around the constricted blood vessels. This then allows better blood flow into the hands.

Migraine Headaches Treatment

In 2010, Botox was approved by the FDA as a treatment for chronic migraines headaches. It helps by blocking the release of chemicals that carry pain signals from your brain. However, you'll need multiple shots around your head and neck every 12 weeks for the pain to subside.

Eye Twitching Treatment

Botox can be used to treat involuntary eye twitching or blepharospasm. It works by blocking the chemical signals that cause the muscles around the eye to contract.

Neck Spasms

Botox helps in significantly reducing chronic pain and stiffness on the neck. By injecting it into the necessary muscles, Botox will then block the signals that cause painful muscle stiffness.
