CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT

You can correct your posture, relieve pain, and improve your overall well being with a chiropractic adjustment. It's more than just "back adjustment", it helps treat muscle and nerve conditions without relying on surgery and medications.

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT?

A chiropractic adjustment is a procedure done only by chiropractors with the use of their hands or a device. Controlled pressure is applied to the malpositioned joint (bone out of place) to reduce nerve irritability, increase mobility, and improve overall function.

Chiropractic adjustment is generally referred to as "spinal manipulation" since it mostly works on realigning the spine. However, it goes beyond just "back adjustment". Chiropractic adjustment can also help relieve tight muscles caused by injuries. It is also known to alleviate pain from headaches, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. People usually opt for regular chiropractic adjustments instead of relying on surgeries and medications.

5 COMMON chiropractor ADJUSTMENT TECHNIQUES

Chiropractic Adjustment technique

1. Gonstead Technique

The Gonstead technique involves adjusting the lower back or pelvis. Patients would be asked to lie on their side while the chiropractor realigns the joints. This technique is used to reduce pain and stiffness, repair joints, and increase mobility.

2. Activator Technique

For the activator technique, a handheld device called the "activator adjusting instrument" will be used. The instrument will deliver gentle impulses onto the extremities and the spine. The force from the impulse helps treat low back pains and migraines. This technique is comfortable and is the usual choice for the elderly.

3. Flexion-Distraction

Flexion-distraction, also known as "Cox Technique" or "Decompression Manipulation", utilizes a special chiropractic table that gently stretches the spine to isolate the problematic area. It is used by 50% of chiropractic clinics. It's best for treating scoliosis, facet joint pain, herniated discs, and other conditions. It doesn't need much force and feels more like a gentle stretch.

4. Thompson Technique

Thompson technique is also known as the "Drop Table" Technique for its use of a special padded adjustment table. The table is segmented. Whenever the chiropractor applies a quick thrust to the patient's body, the section parallel to that part will drop by an inch or less. This dropping motion is to protect the patient from over adjustment. Most people find the dropping motion comfortable.

5. Diversified Technique

Diversified technique is the most widely used adjustment method. It's similar to the Gonstead technique. The only difference is Gonstead is more on P-A (Posterior and Anterior) adjusting, while the diversified technique is more on rotary adjusting. Diversified technique is used on the spine and extremities to repair joint dysfunction, relieve pain, and increase movement.

WHAT TO EXPECT from a chiropractic adjustment session

No special preparation is needed for a chiropractic adjustment.

On your first visit, the chiropractor will ask about your problem, medical history, and conduct a physical exam. You will be asked to undergo X-ray imaging and if necessary other tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Depending on the outcome of the tests, you will be asked to lie or sit down. The chiropractor will place you in a specific position so that they can apply the force needed for the adjustment. Using both hands or a device, the chiropractor will apply a controlled, quick thrust to a joint. You might hear popping sounds as your joints are being moved.

A chiropractic adjustment may need multiple visits with your chiropractor to get the desired results.

BENEFITS OF CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT

Promotes Natural Healing

Chiropractic adjustment is non-invasive and medication-free, which encourages the body to naturally heal itself. Not only that, patients who undergo chiropractic adjustment usually have a faster recovery compared to those who did not.

Boosts Immunity

The nervous system is linked to the immune system. This means that the healthier your spine is, the better the communication is between your body organs and immune system.

Alleviate Pain

Chiropractic adjustment is known to alleviate pain on the neck, back, hips, and joints. It's also an excellent treatment to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines and tension headaches.

Improves Balance

When your neck, back, and pelvis are aligned, your balance and coordination also improve. This is great to help prevent injuries from accidents such as slip, trip, and fall.

Reduce Digestive Problems

Misalignment on the spine has been shown to hinder proper digestion. A regular chiropractic visit can help improve digestion.

Improve Sleep

Without the pain and the stress acquired from a misaligned spine, your body becomes more comfortable and relaxed, making it easier to fall asleep.

Improves Mental Health

Without the pain, tension, and discomfort from having a knotted spine and muscle, the communication within your body is greatly improved. You also become more relaxed, allowing for having a better mood and thinking.

Improves Mobility

Pain and restriction caused by malpositioned joints can be treated with chiropractic adjustments, which greatly improves your mobility.

Reduces Inflammation

A healthier spine means a healthier body. And with a healthy body, neuropeptide production is decreased, thus reducing inflammation.

Relieves Prenatal Discomfort

Back pain during pregnancy is common. Chiropractic adjustment is safe even for pregnant women. Not only does it help reduce back and hip pains, but it also improves pelvic balance.
